A Genuine Freakshow are an artful blend of pop sensibility, icy soundscapes and blistering walls of noise. Their sound, while impressively focused, covers a range of musical staples, with the group letting influences from Mew to Sigur Ros and The National surface throughout.

Their songs capture quirky, catchy pop akin to Pulp in their pomp and grandeur – and even geeky charm. This ability to combine the poppier elements of indie rock whilst maintaining an intricate, delicate soul is what they do best. With a line-up that adds violin, cello and trumpet to the standard rock four-piece of guitar, bass, drums and vocals, their live shows are a master class in how to do epic without slipping into pompous.

After playing over 150 headline and festival shows since the release of debut album ‘Oftentimes’ in late 2010, April 2012 saw the band take a step away from the road and head to the studio with long-term collaborator and producer Jordan Fish to record a handful of new songs the band had written and been performing live over the summer of 2011 onwards.

Originally planned as part of a new album, these 4 songs became a complete story of their own, so the band decided to release their first new music since 2010 with 4-track EP ‘Where The River Bends’ on 3rd December, 2012.

We have decided to release an EP called ‘Where The River Bends’. We will be announcing the release date for this very soon, but it will be before the end of the year. It will be a digital EP with 4 new tracks:

A quick thanks to all of you who voted last month for our ‘Hopscotch’ video on MTV. We were just pipped to the post in the end, but our little birdies say that MTV still love the video.

You may have also noticed that in the last week ‘Oftentimes’ and all the singles have temporarily disappeared from iTunes, Spotify, etc. If you don’t have a copy of the album, you can always pick up the 2CD deluxe edition, or a download, direct from us (and we have put up all our singles with B-sides on the website, too) while we get them back online.

It’s been a while since we last spoke, but thought it was about time to break the silence.

We’ve been working on recording some new tracks (some of which you may have heard us play live) and know that it is taking a while to get these to you. We hope to have some news for you soon.

BIG NEWS though:

MTV in the USA seem to love our video for ‘Hopscotch’. So much so that they’ve been playing it already, and this week it’s part of the MTV-U Freshmen contest against 4 other videos. So we need your help to kick their American “asses”!

Head on over to MTV-U and vote for ‘Hopscotch Machine Gun Madness’ to win.

The best bit? You can vote as many times as you want!

So vote, get your friends to vote, post to your Facebook for your “friends” to vote, vote again, then go back tomorrow and vote some more! (We’ll also post a link to the voting on our Facebook page  for you to share it out, and some links on Twitter to make it easier, too)

Firstly, Oftentimes was released in the US and Canada last week by our friends at OK! Good Records, so a big thanks to them. You can find the album on iTunes, Amazon,  and of course big chain and independent record shops across North America if you want to go an investigate!

Earlier in April we opened the first festival of the year at OneFest, warming up for the likes of Damon Albarn and our our buddies Dry The River. We had a great time, bar the mud!

We are currently in between studios, busying ourselves in a variety of different ways so make sure you keep an aye on our Twitter and Facebook feeds over the next few months…

A Genuine Freakshow

If you’re reading this it means that you survived a ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘Blue Monday’ (which is apparently the most depressing day of the year). It also means that we have as well, so Happy New Year!

We’ve announced a couple of shows this last week, one inReading on 27th January at Play supporting Tall Ships and the other on 10th February at the Bull and Gate in London with Cats and Cats and Cats. Advance (cheaper!) tickets for both are on sale now.

It’s Cats last ever show before they split up so it’s going to be a huge night. If you’ve never heard them or see them live then please come out and watch them, they’re a truly special band and one we will all miss greatly. Madge, Mel, and Dunce will all be playing with them as well, so all the more reason.

We might be announcing the odd show over the next few weeks so do keep your eyes peeled.

We have now finished all of our autumnal dates, so first-off a big thanks to everyone who came out to see us. It was great to see familiar faces and also those who had caught us for the first time at a festival this summer!

Highlights for us included a packed-out 229 club in London, playing for BBC Oxford at the O2 Academy and our first-ever sold-out headline show at South Street Arts Centre in Reading.

At the Reading show we asked the audience to film us with your cameras/phones when we played ‘Our Bodies’. An awful lot of phone-shaped lights then appeared in the crowd so we presume quite a few people must have video to send us!

2 London Shows in December

In between continuing to work on new material we’ve announced our final two shows of the year, both Christmassy celebrations of a type in London… a fanfare please:

6th Dec @ Madame Jojo’s, Soho, London as main support to White Hinterland

15th Dec @ The Lexington, Islington, London opening up for maybeshewill and Cats and Cats and Cats

Both are likely to be a hoot and will no doubt end in drunken merry-making, so why not come on down and share a glass of the old mulled wine with us?

A Genuine Freakshow

Earlier in the year we started working on the follow-up to Oftentimes, writing at a farm in Cornwall and living in a mouldy caravan for a week. We wanted to fine-tune the new songs we’ve been playing live over the summer, and also set to work on completely new ones, so for our next writing session we decided to up the ante somewhat and head to the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales at the start of September.

It was certainly a different experience, but hugely productive… the picture here is of our progress from the studio (and we will just say that most of these song titles are purely for our own amusement and are unlikely to last!)

The next step is to play some of these live and try them out in front of an audience, which is why we’re headed out for a handful of dates starting next week. As always, tickets are on sale directly from us, and you’ll always get them at a discount if you buy them in advance.
